A Glossary of Internet
Terms and Software
Anonymous FTP server -A Unix system that has files you may access through the FTP program. You log onto these hosts using a username of "anonymous" and your email address as a password. Archie - A program that allows you to search for information stored on anonymous FTP sites throughout the world. Flame - What happens when someone does something controversial or stupid in mail, news or IRC. It is a nasty or unpleasant response to a message that someone has sent out. If you get flamed by a stranger, don't take it personally. FTP - File Transfer Protocol - This is the most popular protocol for transferring files on the Internet. On UNIX systems, the program that does this is named ftp. ".zip" files (used on PC's) require binary mode transfers; just type "bin" at the ftp prompt once you are connected. Gopher - A menu-based information retrieval system that allows you to locate and retrieve information on the Internet. We have a list of government gopher services available in /pub/govt.txt IRC - Internet Relay Chat - A program that allows users from across the net to talk to each other in real time. IRC supports a channel metaphor, where each channel is on a unique topic and can have a number of simultaneous users. IRC tends to be full of immature people flaming each other. ISDN - Integrated Services Digital Network - A new service from US-West that allows you to connect to computers at speeds of 56 or 64 kbps. To use ISDN, you must have it installed by US-West and have an ISDN device on each end of the connection. ISDN devices can bridge over two 'B Channels' for 112/128kbps bandwidth. kbps - kilobits per second - a standard for measuring data transmission speed. Another standard is cps - characters per second, which is generally 1/8 the kpbs rating. A 56kbps connection transmits 56,000 bits of data per second. A page of text is about 2000 bytes, or 16,000 bits. Mosaic - A popular graphical interface for accessing the World Wide Web, Gopher and other services. Version 2 still in testing and is buggy, but has more options. Performance under PPP is much improved of you disable image downloading. Netnews -Netnews (nn) is one of the most popular applications on the internet. It is a system of interactive communication split into various topics. There are several thousand groups ranging from recreational to scientific. The quantity of information we receive is approximately equal to a 500 page book per minute! The quality of information varies from excellent to obscene. PINE - A friendly menu driven electronic mail system. CSDC recommends that you use this instead of mail. PPP - Point to Point Protocol - PPP software allows a Macintosh or PC to act as an Internet host. You can use Mac or PC applications to read news, send/receive mail, transfer files, etc.. The only hardware requirements are a modem and telephone line. CSDC uses PPP instead of SLIP because it is a newer, more robust protocol. It is also faster when properly configured. SLIP - Serial Line Internet Protocol - Similar to PPP in functionality. It is older and not as flexible as PPP. TELNET - Refers to both the protocol and the terminal emulator that allows you to log onto other unix hosts. USENET News - a distributed bulletin board system that is spread out over hosts throughout the entire world. There are discussion groups on almost any topic you can imagine. Access news by typing 'nn'. The entire news feed uses up to 500 megabytes per week! v.32bis - A modem protocol that allows modems to communicate at line speeds of up to 14,400bps (bits per second), and up to 57,600bps when data is compressible. Realistic data transfer rates average at about 1500 characters (bytes) per second using zmodem or PPP. WAIS - Wide Area Information Servers - A distributed database protocol for sophisticated searches over the Internet. WWW - World Wide Web - An Internet service that provides hypertext access to information on the Internet. You may access Gopher, WAIS and other services from a WWW browser.
